In stark contrast to the changes taking place around India, its government is lacking a full time foreign minister to steer its foreign policy in a definite direction, web edition of India Times said on Monday.
The situation can be gauged from the various facts. First the never-ending spiral of violence in Sri Lanka which is now threatening to acquire political overtones in India.
While the facts of the Vallipunam air raid by the Sri Lankan army continue to be debated, Chief Minister of the Indian State of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi has plunged his state government into the conflict with the state assembly unanimously condemning the action of the Sri Lankan government in the strongest possible terms, the report said.
That worsening matter is a reflection of the lack of Indian leadership in resolving the conflict. Since the ouster of Natwar Singh in the wake of the Iraq Oil for Food Volcker Report allegations, India has not had a full time foreign minister, the report said.
With the domestic political debate on the Indo-US nuclear deal, it is time for the Indian Prime Minster Manmohan Singh to pay attention to the acute need for a full time foreign minister, the report said.
While with neighbours the acute need for a full time Indian Foreign Minister is being felt ever more for the settlement of various issues, the report said. Manmohan Singh led government has been found seriously wanting on both these fronts, the report said. The absence of a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the national security has also been reflected in the spate of various national incidents.
On the diplomatic front, it appears that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been consumed with defending himself personally on the Indo-US Nuke deal and the Jaswant Singh mole issue, the report said.
